3 Basic Guidelines For A Branded Look And Feel

—for solopreneurs and small businesses

by Christine Unterthiner

Today's post will be short and sweet. I want to talk to those of you who are thinking about or just starting a business or, you've started already and realize your business collateral / marketing tools don't work for what you're up to.

Well, first, congratulations. I'm always blown away, excited and delighted when someone has the guts to go for their dream!

Second, give yourself a few years in business before you spend a lot on creating a brand. This allows you to grow and change and make mistakes without being locked into anything specific. Then, when you're ready, pay the money to a reputable design/branding firm and get yourself branded - it's worth it!

What to do until then?

You can have a branded look and feel for your on- and off-line materials by following these three basic guidelines:

  1. Choose 2-3 colours and use them - consistently - on everything.
  2. Do the same with your fonts. Limit them to 2 if possible, use a third for headings if you must.
  3. Keep your message simple and clear. Before putting anything out there, make sure it lines up with your "why". If you don't know what that is, find out, it's important.
